Inclusion 101: The Autistic Guide to After-School Eruptions
Hi, I’m Katie, owner of Unite Club. Today, let's talk about something many families struggle with: the after-school eruption. You know what I’m talking about—those big explosions of emotion and energy that children often face after a day at school or a big event.
Understanding the After-School Eruption
Many children, especially those who are neurodivergent, find it challenging to regulate their emotions throughout the school day, especially without the right support. They may hold in their feelings until they get to a safe place, which can lead to emotional dysregulation at home, including (but not limited to) meltdowns, shutdowns or hyperactive behaviour.
Imagine your child as a bottle of pop, constantly shaken all day, with help to stop the pressure building, finally letting out all their fizz/pent-up energy and emotions once they’re in a comfortable environment.
How to Help Your Child Regulate
During these difficult times, lowering demands within the first hour after your child gets home can be incredibly beneficial.
Here are just a few tips to help your child regulate:
Snacks and Drinks: Ensure you have snacks and drinks ready for when they get home. A quick snack can help stabilise their mood and energy levels.
Delay Homework: Wait until your child has had time to decompress before diving into homework. Giving them time to relax first can make the process smoother.
Gentle Questions: Ask your child about their day without putting too much pressure on them to respond. Direct questions can be easier to answer than open-ended. Example: What is one thing new you learnt today VS How was your day? It’s important to show interest without overwhelming them.
Create a Decompression Space: Have a quiet, comfortable space where your child can unwind after school. This can help them transition from the school environment to home.
Remember, every family is unique. These tips are a starting point, and it’s important to find what works best for you and your child. Don’t worry about what others are doing or what you see on social media. The goal is to create a supportive and understanding environment that helps your child thrive.
